Brake Rotors

The brake rotors of your Subaru are one of the three main stopping components for your disc braking system.

How Brake Rotors Function on Your Subaru

When you need to stop your car, you press the brake pedal. The brake fluid that rests inside a reservoir is pressurized down a series of lines to the brake calipers. These calipers act as clamps that press their attached brake-pads into the surface of your rotor discs that rest attached to the axle behind your wheels.

The pads rub on the rotors to create the safe and reliable friction to slow and stop your car.

The several main types of brake rotors are smooth surfaced, drilled, slotted, and drilled-slotted discs. Smooth and flat in nature and provide quality smoothness when braking. For drivers that want a cooler and more performance-enhanced stopping capability, drilled and slotted allow for more air flow through the brakes which is best for pad resistance.

What to Look for in Failing Subaru Rotors

Brake rotors can get corroded over the years and usually between 60,000 and 80,000 miles is when you should routinely inspect them for durability. Rotors can also crack, chip, become scored or brittle and warped from long term use. If you notice a pulling to one side or unusual dipping of the hood when braking, find new replacement calipers ASAP. Doing so earlier than later can help prevent other damages to your pads or calipers.
